The NUC-TUCT Non-Profit Homes Corporation
The congregations of Newtonbrook United Church and the Taiwanese United Church in Toronto set up NUC-TUCT Non-Profit Homes in 1994 as a housing development corporation. It was with a view to making better use of the parking lot to fulfil a dire need for housing in the community that NUC-TUCT decided to build affordable housing on their own land, hoping to set an example and serve as a model for other faith groups. The corporation has established a community liaison committee to pave avenues of communication between local residents and the NUC-TUCT board of directors.
Lester B. Pearson Place
Lester B. Pearson Place provides 53 units of permanent, affordable housing designed for families, single people and seniors. This location is ideal for housing as it offers easy transit access, numerous schools, a community centre, a hospital, medical and dental services, and shopping all nearby. The building consists of one, two and three-bedroom apartments. Amenities include indoor and outdoor children’s play areas, a multi-purpose community room and air-conditioning. The project takes its name from former Prime Minister and Nobel Peace Laureate, The Rt. Hon. Lester Bowles Pearson, whose father, Rev. Edwin Arthur Pearson, was a minister at Newton Brook Wesleyan Methodist Church (now Cummer Avenue United Church) in the 1890s.
Who is Being Housed?
27 units at Lester B. Pearson Place are market rent. The remaining 26 units rent at below-average affordable rates for moderate and low income households. Seniors are accommodated primarily in one-bedroom units specially designed with barrier-free access and safety features.
